Another Inspiration Deck Done!

Just finished another round of deck-making! If you're quick, you can still make the September 15th deadline! (See details at http://www.carddeckswap.com.)

All in all the project took me about 8 days, usually between an hour or two each of those days. This time around I followed Jessica's tutorial and glued my cards to scrapbook paper with gel medium, to have a pattern for the backs of the cards. It worked a lot better than the freezer paper I used last deck! It kept my cards flat and neat throughout the whole project. Then I added gesso until the card images were covered up and added some color.

After that I decided to add some Golden Iridescent Pearl with some sponge shapes I found at Pat Catan's (a local craft store). The effect was stronger than I expected, so I did another light wash of acrylic color over top.

Then I added some dots with drywall tape and white acrylic paint... it produces an effect similar to stamping with bubble wrap, but with much less mess!

After that I stamped on some stars using a foam stamp, and cut up my song lyrics while waiting for it to dry. Once each coat of paint was dry to the touch, I stacked the sheets together, placing a sheet of wax paper in between; it kept everything from sticking together.

I also added some washi tape, pre-printed with music notes (made by Tim Holtz), torn and stuck down in random spaces.

After that I glued on the lyrics and gave the cards another coat of gel medium as a sealer.

Then it was time to cut them out. Here is a sampling of the finished cards...

I was really happy with the way these turned out... almost sad to give them up! But I know I'll be getting some awesome cards in return.

To recap, here's the steps I took from start to finish:
  • Day 1 - Got the cards glued down to the papers.
  • Day 2 - Gesso
  • Day 3 - Color
  • Day 4 - Sponging On Iridescent Pearl
  • Day 5 - Stenciling and Stamping
  • Day 6 - Cutting Up Lyrics
  • Day 7 - Washi Tape and Gluing Lyrics
  • Day 8 - Cut Out & Ready to Mail!
I can't wait for the next round! Thanks to Jessica Brogan for all her hard work in organizing these swaps!

New Inspiration Deck Swap!

There's a new Inspiration Deck Swap going on! Jessica Brogan created a new website for the swap at http://www.carddeckswap.com. This time the theme is favorite song lyrics.

So far I've chosen my lyrics and got my cards glued to their papers. I'm following Jessica's tutorial this time around; I'm hoping using a paper for the backs will keep them from getting sloppy when I paint them!

So this is day one... more to come in the days and weeks ahead!

Inspiration Deck Swap

The Inspiration Deck Swap cards are here! And word is, there will be another one coming up soon, so keep checking Jessica Brogan's blog for updates: http://www.insearchofdessert.com

Here are some pics of my cards and all the beautiful cards I got in return!

Studio Sunday!

The Inspiration Deck is almost complete! All I have left to do is take the cards off the freezer paper and stick my name tags on the back.

I made a few extras for myself, and I separated those from the freezer paper already with great success! The double-sided tape did come off the cards easily, thankfully. All in all, I'm really pleased with how they turned out.

Here's a few close-ups...

And here's a finished set! Not sure what I'll be up to next... check back and find out!

Studio Sunday!

Still working on the Inspiration Deck... http://www.insearchofdessert.com/?p=8428 I'm determined to get it done by next weekend, and so far I'm on schedule!

Today I spattered some metallic acrylic over all the cards, and then printed and cut out the quotes that I'll be gluing on next week.

More to come next week!

Studio Sunday

I'm making progress on the Inspiration Deck a little bit at a time... This week I just went through all the cards and randomly glued some torn tissue paper on them. Next I will probably spatter a little metallic paint and put some gel medium over top as a sealer before I glue down my quotes and embellishments. Stay tuned!

Studio Sunday: Inspiration Deck!

I found this project on another blog awhile ago and wasn't able to make the deadline. But the host, Jessica Brogan, has decided to run it again, so I'm going to give it a shot! Details here: http://www.insearchofdessert.com/?p=8428

If you want to participate, I recommend checking out Karen Isaacson's blog for some helpful tips:
http://iamrushmore.blogspot.com/2012/09/inspiration-deck-swap-part-on.html

I tried the "iron-the-playing-cards-onto-freezer-paper" thing and it just wasn't working for me... Maybe if you actually know how to use an iron normally, you would have a better chance! So I ended up using double-sided tape. If it comes off easily, great. If not, I'll be sticking labels on the back anyways.

After that, I used the roller to gesso all the cards. (What a time-saver!) I gave them each 2 coats to completely cover the playing card graphics.

After that I took a bunch of different colors, painted the cards, and added a little texture. I'm letting them dry for now, and then I'll be adding some embellishments and the quotes as time permits.

More to come soon!
